Think Like Grandma Moses

Grandma Moses

In Haifa, coming upon art books in English is a rare thing. So when I stumbled upon an original copy of Otto Kallir’s 1954 ground-breaking book about the art and  life of Grandma Moses, I was thrilled and immediately bought it. I grew up hearing Grandma Moses’ name when I was still too young to know a Picasso from a Moses. Yet somehow, the message of her art touched me to the core. Grandma Moses proved that at any age we can do art. At any time of our lives we can turn to art to give us a sense of joy and purpose. Only after the passing of her husband, Anne Mary Robertson Moses, as she was known in her small town in upstate New York, turned to painting. She began in earnest well into her seventies,  had her first exhibition in New York at 78 and by the end of her very long life Grandma Moses had become a household name, honored by presidents, and one of the most famous folk artists in America.

In these two companion Sprints, one focusing on outdoor landscape painting, the second on painting room interiors, you’ll receive video lessons that explain core principles in Grandma Moses’ artistic approach. Work at your own pace with these principles that in Grandma Moses’s eyes were not so much principles as practical ways of approaching painting as service from the heart.

Each of these Sprints offer a focused two weeks of community sharing and art exchange. For many of our repeat members, the feeling of belonging to an inspirational and supportive community keeps us going, and growing together.  Beginners are absolutely welcome!
