The Best of Intentions

Painted by anonymous volunteers

When Oshiki peninsula was destroyed by the tsunami, out went the unsightly stuff as well. No billboards anywhere. No neon signs. Nothing to disturb the peace except for a growing crop of storage containers painted by well-meaning volunteers who come armed with pots of paints and spray guns and a mandate to bring color back to the village. But I wonder what the locals think. Mostly elderly, do they find these storage ‘murals’ to be pleasing or to be invasive? Peaceboat volunteers offered their creativity with good intentions . They have done enormous good and ongoing disaster relief in the Ishinomaki areas and write on their blog that these container murals were commissioned by the container owners. I hope the art brings well-needed cheer to the survivors of Kabuchihama.
